Tonga

History
Polynesian people have lived on Tonga for at least 3,o00 years. The Dutch were the first to explore the Tongan islands in 1616. James Cook landed on the islands in 1773 and 1777 and proclaimed them friendly islands. The current royal dynasty was founded in 1831 by Taufa'ahau Tupou, who took the name George I. He consolidated the kingdom by conquest in 1875 and granted a constitution. The country became a protected state of Britain in 1900 when George I great-grandson signed a treaty with Great Britain. On June 4th, 1970, Tonga became an independent nation.
